In what circumstances might a chaperone be appropriate for a medical examination?

I saw my urologist two weeks ago. She asked me if I wanted a chaperone. (I said I didn’t need one.)
In my experience and observation, medical practitioners will offer a chaperone when (a) the exam requires exposing the “naughty bits” and (b) the professional and patient are different sexes.
